Volumes are written about how to improve your email content. But a great place to start is your subject line. According to marketing advisors Convince & Convert, 35 percent of recipients open email based on the subject line alone. Think about it. What subject lines get your attention? Your customers are no different. Their key questions are who is it from, why should they open it and how will it help them.

While there’s no magic formula, successful subject lines should be short, action-oriented and to the point. Marketo, a leader in digital marketing software and solutions, advises that effective subject lines should do one of the following:

  • Educate : “7 things SMB owners can learn about security”
  • Ask a question : “Did you back up your data today?”
  • Announce a sale or new product : “Save up to 50% on storage”
  • Offer a solution to a problem : “Make mobile workers more productive”
  • Address a popular or timely topic : “The state of big data: How can you manage it affordably?”

Getting a potential customer to open your email is at least half the battle—if not more than half—so be sure to find a catchy headline to draw them in and let these five genres guide you. Not sure where to start or have more questions?
